Foreign Degrees

To be registered in Texas, an applicant must meet the same education requirements as any Texas registrant. For specific information, select the appropriate profession:

Foreign Degree – Architecture

All applicants must present evidence of approved education, must complete the Architectural Experience Program (AXP) through the National Council of Architect Registration Boards (NCARB,) pass the Architect Registration Examination (ARE,) and provide proof of legal status in the U.S.

To apply for registration in Texas, first enroll in the AXP program at https://www.ncarb.org/gain-axp-experience

You should then submit your transcript and have your degree evaluated by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) at https://www.ncarb.org/advance-your-career/ncarb-certificate/get-certified/education-alternative/eesa Contact them first to see if your transcript should be translated. When the evaluation is complete, ask NAAB to submit a copy to NCARB to be added to your IDP records.

If NAAB indicates that your degree does not meet the NCARB educational standard, additional education will likely be required.

After you have completed the educational requirement, and have at least 6 months experience under a registered architect, you may begin taking the ARE, and should contact our office for information on getting started. You may complete the TBAE online application at https://indreg.tbae.texas.gov/Home/Register You will still need to complete the AXP before becoming a registered architect, but you can begin taking parts of the exam while completing the internship.

When your AXP is complete, you should ask NCARB to transmit a copy of your records to our Board. When we receive those records, we will contact you. For more information on the exam, please see the NCARB web site at https://www.ncarb.org

Before finally becoming registered as an architect, all applicants must provide fingerprints for the purpose of a criminal history check. To read the TBAE rules regarding registration by exam, see Subchapters B & C
